"Two kinds of fantasy." There are two kinds of fantasy tales. The first is the sort where its about the fantasy content, about encountering fantastic monsters and events, identifying directly with the protaganists, becoming a part of a story in a far off land with swords and sorcery, or lasers and space ships, or ghosts and witchcraft, and living it, experiencing it, through the book. This is the sort of fantasy adventure novel that is more common, and is generally found in the popular and serial form, dungeons and dragons books &c&c. The second sort of fantasy is more complex. The fantastic element still exists, but it only serves as the setting for a different sort of story. The characters have a tendancy towards being full rather than flat, flawed rather than empowered, realistic. The story that follows is not just about the amazing adventure that the characters partake, but is a more in-depth examination of some more concrete and complex concept. Temperance is... More > a novel of the second sort. Mr. DuBois presents us with a totally alien world, a totally alien species. However, the lives of its inhabitants paralell our own: love, life, death, loyalty, duty, the divine. Through the experiences of his characters, Mr. DuBois embarks on a discussion and examination not of what could exist in some other place, but of what occurs in our own world. A very well written and deeply composed novella, and an excellent and enjoyable debut from an emerging writer.< Less
