The book is only 39 pgs & 1.90 MBs to download. Exeter in 1776. Sketches of an old New Hampshire town as it was a hundred years ago. Prepared by Charles H. Bell for the Ladies' Centennial Levee held in Exeter, Feb. 22, 1876. It is described within with clearity how Exeter actually appeared in 1776, what activities were taking place, the rich & the poor homes, Churches & clergy of the day as well as the ship builders & the effects that the Revolutionary War had on the ship building industry. It describes what the 'village' looked like before all the streets were laid and the fact that as long as there was travel on the river not much thought was given to the care of the roads. Very interesting to read this history of Exeter.
