All children at times sense they are adopted. They are convinced they are foreigners in a strange household. Charles felt this often when his father opposed and belittled everything he enjoyed. Against his parent's wishes he studied to be and became a scientist. With a world-changing invention, Charles H. House made it possible for the world to watch the first walk on the moon rather than to listen to it. At age 19 he sat on a couch in his childhood home at an uncomfortable meeting between two sets of parents. Charles described the awkward revelation that his girlfriend was pregnant with a baby they wanted to keep and raise as a young married couple. Her mother warned them of a genetic problem, and his response set off a chain of events Charles could never have imagined. In a narrative voice that felt like a conversation, he revealed how their announcement unwittingly revealed his mother's secret. Almost from that moment, until his third wife urged him to make the effort to reunite... More > with his mother, he revealed how socially isolated he was from the family who raised him. Even stranger, he knew at age 19 that he had another family who knew nothing of his existence. I felt compassion as I read about how he found a way to become reacquainted with his estranged mother to learn about his other family. It would be too easy to blame his mother, but I felt sympathy and empathy for the woman who caused such life-long anxiety in her son's life. Perhaps because he detached from his family and made a world-wide name for himself at Hewlett Packard, he could overcome his mother's critical demeanor and forge a new relationship with her later in life. He created his own life, developed new relationships, and kept his mind busy. Yet underneath his achievements and busy life, he hid from others that he never knew who he really was. Only his estranged mother of thirty years had the key to unlocking the mystery of his identity. This is a story about resiliency. Chuck's ability to take absolutely insane situations in stride amazed me. Kudos to you for having the strength to tell your story. I know how difficult it is to forgive, and try to understand what caused parents’ behaviors that affected your life. The book is well written and honest. Five stars.< Less
