A boy uses his mill village wits to save a way of life. Doak Justice,a 16 year old boy learns of a scheme from the other side of the tracks that would allow Japanese industrialists to acquire all the cotton mill equipment and move it overseas. If successful the mill would close and the cotton mill workers would lose their jobs and way of life. In his adventures Doak tests his mill village wits and skills gained from life on the mill hill. He takes on the personality of his long studied fictional hero of books, comics and movies Frank Happiwell. Like Frank he is able to right some wrongs and champion the underdogs on his adventures, and later using his mill village wits he foils a scheme to close the mill, and saves a way of life.
