"Scratches the Sword & Sorcery Itch" Saunders definitely took a page out of Howard as Imaro is an exile, though Imaro's ejection is well-defined, and the only time one ever reads of another Ilyasai is in his origins, as the Cimmerians save Howard never got to an origins tale. This time around Imaro is on a quest of pure vengeance that may also result in either his saving the world or ending it. I did like this book better than the previous two. For one Saunders' monsters in this Imaro novel are simply better written and seem to fit better into the story whereas he overdescribed them in earlier stories, here he leaves just enough for the imagination to take over. The violence is amped up, and frankly I like violence in my Sword & sorcery. My only real criticisms are that sometimes the story drags and Imaro's Drizzt-esque self loathing/worth issues tend to be over-stated. However with a lack of sword & sorcery tales Imaro 3 does satisfy in that vein plus Saunders'... More > world still feels fresh. The lack of a concrete hero vs. villain at the end also stuck in my craw a little but I will be onboard for the next one!< Less
