Richard Faraday is the Ghost Detective. A man born a heartbeat into 1900, seemingly immortal, and with a habit of solving crimes of a mystical nature. For nearly a century the world was protected from threats from beyond by Richard and his wife, but decades ago the Faradays vanished, and they haven’t been seen since… Until now. It's a new century, and just underneath the surface of the world an almighty evil stirs. A seemingly normal university student has her life turned upside down as a horrific haunting becomes so much more and the only one who can help her is the missing Ghost Detective, who might not be all that he seems. Richard Faraday is back, but is that a good thing?

Richard Faraday, Ghost Detective is an amazing debut from a prodigously talented writer. The dark and apocalyptic atmosphere is set from the first pages and yet the tension seems to increase to an almost impossible level by the climactic chapter. The storytelling is cannily crafted to keep you turning pages long after you realized you should have turned out the light and gone to sleep. The plot refuses to take a predictable course, with rewards for the reader in every chapter--- you won't have read a book like this before. The titular character is a compelling creation, a lovechild of Doctor Who and Hellblazer, with a gritty panache that will set Jim Butcher looking to his laurels. But we've not seen a character quite like Richard Faraday, before: I'd like to see John Constantine rocking a God Gun in one scene, and in the next romancing the inimitable and formidable Scarlett Faraday! While the Ghost Detective gets top billing, the wonderfully imagined cast of secondary characters of... More > ghosts, magicians, extra-dimensional beasties, mystics and good, old-fashioned mythological divinities threaten to steal the show. Certain of them fairly scintilate off the page, flaring all-too briefly before we are whisked off to the next encounter. Because this book does not stand still for long. Action ranges from a bookstore in a provincial seaside town in the UK to demonic horses thundering across the plains of Hell--- and even more exotic locales. This is a fun book and a fast read. Scary, but not without a sense of humor. Heavy, but packed with adventure. Fans of horror, urban fantasy or H. P. Lovecraft will love it, and there's even a little sprinkling of something for the romantic in all of us. Best of all, the ending leads me to believe that a new volume is forthcoming. And I'll be the first in line to buy it!"< Less
