"From the Dredges of the Soul" The death of my father had me in its clutches. Anger immobilized the once soothing beating of my heart. Seeking to breathe life back into my soul, I turned to poetry, specifically FROM THE DREDGES OF THE SOUL... by Chazarrae Freeman. Although I could not comprehend all I was reading, Freeman's artistry was evident. Rich poetry such as his usually is a moving experience for me, but this time I just couldn't focus due to my grief. An enjoyable read, I thought, but I was on a quest to have my peace restore. I would pick up the book later, after the restoration of my distracted mind and captured heart. The first couple poems; however, seem to have forged a hope within that compelled me to read just one more of Freeman's poems. Timing is a potentially powerful thing. Before reading the poems, death's anger had been lying on the surface of my heart capping off access to all the other stuff that a heart can hold. The surface tension of my anger kept... More > my deep, deep love for Dad from rising like a geyser, breaking through the surface tension. For much of my life, I had believed that the strength of love was exceedingly more powerful than death's grip ever could be; yet, I was not able to sense love nor its strength up until I finished reading that last-ditch-effort poem. These few poems wrenchingly had dredged up so much of the love I've experienced in life that tears finally started flowing from my dry dead eyes, and my unwelcomed taskmaster, Anger, quickly dissipated from my troubled heart. I have no question that Freeman's artistry made this freeing experience happen for me. I suspect he has experienced a few lifetime's worth of deep feelings, wrenchings and releasings of his own. FROM THE DREDGES OF THE SOUL... is dedicated in part "To God, whose love 'dredged' me from the clutches of death." No wonder poems which grew out of the dredges of his soul could release me from the clutches of death. In our anger-producing society, might we not all benefit from Freeman's skill to release peace.< Less
