"A frantic ride from start to finish. " The Bikes of New York is one of those stories that captivate you from the first page, entice you through an amazing world and drag you inexorably to a stunning climax. It was billed as SF/Horror, but I would class it more as dark SF. The horror elements are there, but there’s no blood and gore to be had. Rather, the chill sneaks up on you as you read, catches hold of you and drags you into a dark place where you struggle along with the protagonist. And Luc struggles, from the opening sentence right through to the end. This is no anti-hero, moaning and weeping about his moral choices. Nor is he a superhero, diving in to conflict for king and country. Luc, stripped to the core, is just a person. If I may borrow from another classic; “He was you… and me. He was all of us.” His struggle becomes our struggle. Mr Brown is a master of lyrical prose. The opening line is written in second person POV, an unusual and unpopular choice in modern... The unknown narrator speaks to us throughout the story, and the relaxed, conversational style contrasts beautifully with the subtle tension in the rest of the prose. Mr Brown blends it seamlessly with the third person POV of the rest of the novel. This in no way detracts from its power. The reader is drawn in and made to feel like they, too, are walking the streets of New York in this new and frightening world. Even the supporting characters are real, flesh and blood beings, well painted with simple touches that make them come alive. The prose is fresh and free of purple descriptions, while still managing to reach an almost poetic cadence in places. I cannot speak highly enough of this story. Well done, Mr Brown. A superb and rich tale which both elevates and terrifies. A great gift for the SF aficionado.< Less
