An intriguing, exciting mystery novel by such a young lady. Her perception of how destitute children interact with an adult life in a world so different from ours is amazing. Sextuplets all fending for themselves is a very mature notion. Well done, Chelsea. I look forward eagerly to reading your next novel. A second reviewer says: Backwards sits between fact and fantasy. The setting seems real and of our time, yet we get a sense of times past and of lives which border on mythical. The real strength of the novel for young readers, however, is that very individual siblings care for each other and that family ties are strong enough to overcome separation and hard times. These themes of the power of relationships and of resilience are timely for young readers.

Backwards is an energetic, positive and thoughtful tale of very lindividual, loving and resourceful children. I love the way it comes across as timeless. It could be happening now, but there is also a sense of the children living in a time past. Similarly, the setting appears real, but it also verges on a fantasy world. Backwards displays a strong sense of connectedness to family. Sibling and child-parent relationships sustain through disrupting life events, so that young readers can relate to and gain heart from reading the text. It is really all about relationships and resilience.
