The role of Social Services in long term care has become crucial with changes in surveyor guidance and the new MDS 3.0. Suddenly the elder's psychosocial well-being demands equal effort to their physical and medical needs. Social Service Personnel in the long term care setting now must learn the elders' history, preferences and routines and advocate for services to be delivered around those priorities, rather than the prioriites of staff tasks. In other words long term care is transitioning from serving the institution toward serving individuals.
