A fascinating collection of poetic and moving plays. Chiori Miyagawa seems keenly in tune with her medium, using the restrictions of a theatrical script to freely forge into occasional magical realism, which render her female protagonists both complex and interesting. I Have Been to Hiroshima Mon Amour and America Dreaming are experimental writing examining historical events. Jamaica Avenue is a poignant play and offers great roles for young actors. This is also true for two of her 10-minute plays that are included. Yesterday’s Window is a lovely, slightly surreal play. Antigone’s Red is loosely based of Sophocles’ Antigone, which takes place during WWII in a relocation camp for Japanese Americans. Yesterday’s Window can be cast in any way; Antigone’s Red requires Asian American actors. The book is a satisfying anthology of plays covering various subjects, and one gets a clear sense of the author’s range.
