From the October 2011 issue of Learned Publishing: The 2011 Guide to Free or Nearly-Free e-Books by Chris Armstrong delivers on its attention-getting title. E-books in Libraries: A Practical Guide, and points the reader to the URLs of 12 well-selected, recognized providers, Armstrong defines the niche. The 2011 Guide to Free or Nearly-Free e-Books is only 150 pages, not counting lead-in or index matter, but it compacts a lot of great information into an easy-to-navigate package. Armstrong’s strengths are evident throughout the book, especially in the well-written introduction. He brings experience as Managing Director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), where he works on the effective use of electronic information resources, and benefits from his company’s involvement in e-books research. He served on the JISC National e-Book Observatory project. Armstrong also regularly conducts training courses on the management of e-book collections in libraries.
