Apr 12, 2010Easy and consistent story to follow with a very positive message. It's not that we make mistakes in life; it's how we go forward to better ourselves after making a bad choice that separates the wheat from the chaff. I will definitely give this book to each of my grandsons for their 10tth birthday.
Apr 11, 2010A great book for a 12 year old kid, or anyone who has ever been one. I just finished it and plan to read it with my boys. I look forward to reading additional books by this author.
Apr 8, 2010My 12 year old son and I read Beckett 81 and we both really enjoyed it. He plays hockey rather than football, but I think this book is relevant no matter which sport a kid plays. Hard work and determination pay off in the end. I like the basic family values running through the story also. And it is written in a way that kids can relate to the main character, Johnny. I believe it is a book that would appeal to 4th, 5th and 6th graders.
Apr 6, 2010This book has a great flow to it and will especially appeal to boys from 8 to 14. I really like the main character, Jonhhy Beckett, whose inner struggles are typical of an 11-12 year old boy. This book delivers a powerful message about how having a positive attitude and being respectful and obedient will actually get you further in the long run. I lent my copy to a 10 year old boy next door who, when he returned it, asked if he could borrow the sequel when it comes out.
Apr 6, 2010This is a great book for kids and adults. I bought it for my nephew who, like Johnny Beckett, dreams of playing Pop Warner football. He's 7 and has been reading it with his Dad...both really enjoying the story!
Mar 26, 2010I think this is a great book for both kids and adults. The author is really in touch with the main character and does a great job creating someone kids can relate to. I highly recommend this book for young readers!
Mar 16, 2010I just finished Beckett 81 and really enjoyed it. I think it captured the essence of an 11 year old boy. It was good to read a wholesome book for elementary or middle school kids especially boys. I am going to pass this on to my grandson who will be 8 in May.
Mar 16, 2010Beckett 81 by Chris Buccholz appears to be a coming-of-age novel written with a young adult audience as its target. But, ultimately, it is a novel that will appeal to people of all ages. Johnny Beckett is eager to play football, both because everyone else is doing it, but more importantly because he loves the game. When his parents refuse to let him play due to his age, Johnny reacts atypically for his age and finds a way to pursue his goal of becoming a football player while still adhering to his parents' wishes. The sheer exuberance with which Johnny tackles his plan is heartwarming and evokes a nostalgic feeling of our own youth when nothing seemed impossible. You cannot help but root for Johnny and hope that he will meet his goals. For the older reader, Johnny is the son we all would like to have: not perfect, but loving and smart and positive and upbeat. For the younger reader, Johnny is the friend you would like to have or even the idealized version of yourself that you can... More > aspire to be. Buccholz did a great job of creating a character that is appealing and likeable. You will be sad when the story ends because you'll wish that you could have continued on with Johnny, catching footballs on those cool fall days, running plays and dreaming the big dreams.< Less
Mar 15, 2010Two of my sons read this book and absolutely loved it; one of my sons is not a big reader but read it in just a couple days. My other son would like to know if there are going to be anymore books like this one.
