Normally I stick to m/m romance. I decided to give this a try due to my interest in German culture. Alas, the setting was mostly wallpaper. Although the character of Lisa is an American, she speaks fluent German and has a German mother. So the hoped-for exploration of a cross-cultural romance never really surfaced. However, it is a well-written story, with very few typos. Marika, the main character, is fully developed and sympathetic. Her journey from a shy teenage misfit to a confident, successful adult is realistically portrayed. Although I'm not a lesbian and so have no first-hand experience, her road to acceptance of her sexuality felt authentic. Sylvie, Marika's best friend, was much harder to like. In fact, about halfway through the book I was ready to smack her. And Marika for putting up with her. There are no graphic sex scenes, so if you want sizzle look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a sweet yet angsty love story you will like this book.
