"Names, a book by Chris Lucas" This book is a very well-written first novel (I believe the author is working on a second book now). It tells the two parallel stories of James - a young lad with learning disabilities; and Craig - a newly recruited nurse who helps to look after him. I found some of the stories about life in the institution pretty horrific, as I work in this field now and really hope that we have moved on from treating people in these ways (although I am sure with the various scandals that stuff still does go on). The author makes us sympathetic to Craig, despite him being sucked into being part of 'the system' that is oppressive to people. The book is also unexpectedly humourous, in a dark kind of way. It is well structured with the two stories starting off separately and gradually coming together. I think it is a good story as well as making you think about the issues, so would be good for people who work/ have an interest in disability, as well as people who... More > just enjoy a good book. It made me think it is a good read for anyone who has forgotten just how badly disabled people have been / are being treated, in the name of the 'care' system - it is not even that long ago that the book is set.
