John Stuart Mill has been influential in the development of the minds within Western liberal democracies. Within his many books he laid down the foundations for the way many think about politics, economics, and morality. However, between his books On Liberty and Utilitarianism, Mill builds a major contradiction within his worldview. In On Liberty, Mill espouses to protect individuals from the "tyranny of the majority" while on the other hand he praises all actions which build the happiness of the majority in Utilitarianism. This essay searches through the words of John Stuart Mill and tests possible explanations in a series of thought experiments to see if this contradiction can be reconciled. With this deep examination into the contradicting morality of modern societies, a new light is cast on an old problem which opens up new possibilities to end age-old strife.
