Whitehack is a complete fantasy role-playing game in only 64 pages. It contains everything you need to get started quickly, including a campaign setting and two adventures. It is an emergent game that can help you take your first steps and then keep challenging you as you beome a more experienced player. The rules are a mix of old and new school mechanics, built into a solid whole that can meet the demands of long campaigns. Jan 12, 2019The only old school rules set you´ll ever need. Takes the very best from the original game and tweaks the not so good parts, creating a complete game. Rooted in old school, but with great playability and potential for the creative DM.
Mar 11, 2018Original D&D (also referred to as "White Box" or "Litte Brown Books") was wonderfully inspired and incredibly fun, but it was a mess. Many individuals have since cleaned up the old product with their clones of the White Box rules. White Box is chosen by many gamers because of its lack of rules: Referees can add new rules and build the game up or tear it down however they want for whoever they're running the game for. I absolutely love this style of gaming because different gaming groups have different desires for their game. But something still doesn't feel quite right for me no matter how many times I study OD&D. It's not *truly* freeing. In comes Whitehack, a lean, mean, subjective machine. This game does not have an inherent setting, just an example of one. This game does not have an alignment system, unless it's pertinent enough to turn into a "group". The classes are very well constructed, but exist as frameworks for the gaming group to fill... More > in with flavor and flair. So with Whitehack, you truly get a lego kit without instructions. Lots of great blocks and pieces, but the creativity must come from the Referee and players. I've yet to play it, but it's clear that using the system will work really well and you kind of get this zen moment when you see how much care and thought Mehrstam put into making the rules feel as intuitive and seamless as possible. Overall, I'm really impressed with this product. The OSR has a lot of content, and if you're someone like me who needs a "go-to" game, I think Whitehack has the right balance of freeform and structure that makes it worth committing to.< Less
Jun 3, 2017The WhiteHack rpg is a very simple system that allows a GM and players to customize a game easily. The rules are streamlined and easy to comprehend. I have run several sessions of WhiteHack and the players love the freedom the system gives them. All I did was create a few parameters and create a list of choices for the players to run with. The auction system is innovative and even character death is handled in a unique way. Overall a fun game that is simple and allows for easy customization.
May 17, 2017After hearing much praise for this system, i decided to drop the money on a hardcover version of whitehack. The Book is thin at 64 pages, rock solid hardcover, but a warpy dust jacket that is more annoying than useful. If anything it makes the book look nice I guess. As for the system itself... While it has a few nifty ideas, it is much too broad in it's interpretation when it comes down to character creation. While 3 base classes define a rough edge of what you can and can't do, Defining who and what exactly you're character is left entirely up to you and the Game Master. Depending on the group, this may turn out amazing and fun, or consistent arguments at the table (like my group). If only the author could've added a table of broad outlines of races and classes to keep everything moving. To me, it feels like the author wrote this book based on a few shower thoughts, and filled in the rest of the pages with, figure it out yourself. Too much is left up to the GM to figure out, all the... More > while he has to run an entire world... Not to mention, lack of an affordable PDF format! come on, really? I had to shell out $28 for 64 pages? That's absurd. There are dozens of similarly themed OSRs out their in both print and PDF for a few bucks with better well written rules. I'd also like to mention the lack of community support. I have not found any 3rd party material like classes, races, or adventures. So i Hope you like homebrew everything!< Less
