Sydney Smith is the first female manager in Tradewinds Travel Company. Feisty and ambitious, her first posting is as new manager of Brass Bay tourist resort on the tiny, unknown Caribbean island of St Clovis. She arrives to find that she has an uphill task, facing tropical inertia and suspicion, and a clique of chums who smile in her face but of whom she is instinctively wary. However, despite feeling that she has been posted to a backwater she sets about her task of promoting the resort’s appeal with bustling professionalism. When a ‘dive operation’ is proposed this appears at first to be an attractive catalyst to boost tourist interest but instead sets in motion events that spiral out of Sydney’s control. The authenticity of detail throughout demonstrates clearly that the milieu is one in which the author is very comfortable and familiar and as a result the finished product makes fine reading. Fast moving with good characterisation and crisp conversation, Brass Bay is polished... More > enough to be available on airport and supermarket shelves.< Less
