This is not my usual genre of literature, but I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I found some of the ideas in the story in relation to characters' physical and mental traits utterly unique and brilliant. It is hard to imagine the thought processes that created these characters! The characters are fairly intricate and numerous so perhaps better for slightly older children, but the language is very easy to follow. The pace of the book is fast which I believe will engage and retain the interests of both children and adults. There were many occassions where I chucled whilst reading the book. I found the book innovative as it did not stick to many of the conventions of children's literature. Given this is a first novel I believe that it shows great promise and I look forward to reading more from Mr Berry!

A fantastic read! Although this book is aimed at, and would be suitable for, children of all ages, even as an adult I found it totally gripping from page one. The author's projection of Jemwar, the four friends and their journey had me emmersed in the story, so much so, that I had to read to the end in three sittings to find out what happened to my favourate character (Guibbette). The characters and story were so original and vibrant that it kept me entertained throughout. I would recommend to anyone who wanted to purchase an entertaining book for a child or just wanted an easy read for themselves!

The author clearly has a fully formed notion of his fantasy world. This is reflected in the book’s detailed descriptions, with the reader quickly becoming accustomed to the settings and characters and immersed in the story. The different creatures are very imaginative and easily visualised. There is a good mix of humour and dark elements which create a well-rounded plot. I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Pendulum Swings’ and would recommend it to adults and children alike.

The Pendulum Swings is a good read, It's a nice short book, good for both older children and teenagers as well as adults, a well written story, you are fully immersed in the world of Jemwar which is described in vivid detail making the story more enjoyable as you can visualise the world and characters easily, and the story also has moral value, the characters show you the true meaning of friendship. It is a new classic in the fantasy field!
