"Really, really good" Firstly, the photography is superb. He should be a National Geographic photographer. Secondly, this book is original. It is not all twee, glossy, cheesy photos of 'traditional natives'. This book is clearly the work of someone who knows Central Asia and has travelled widely. So we do get gorgeous pictures of the Pamirs and the Silk Road city of Samarkand, but we also get powerful pictures of corroding, polluting Soviet factories, soldiers toasting with great goblets of brandy, the crazy personality cult of the President of Turkmenistan and all the rest of the variety that makes Central Asia so facinating. I have travelled through much of Central Asia. This book captures what I saw and experienced but was not skilful enough to capture with a camera. This book is original, and Chris Herwig deserves to sell a lot of copies of it.
