This is not a review, it was originally a comment by me to another review, just saying 'thank you' really, but when this website was re-organised it was mistakenly included and it looked as if I was reviewing my own book! Only it didn't even make sense because it was an answer to someone else's comments... anyway I asked them twice to remove it but they haven't, so I've just edited it instead. The website upgrade also wiped out the individual star-ratings, but you can tell from the summary star-rating at the top of the page that they were quite good! In fact they were all five-star ratings apart from Maurice Appleton's rather severe two-stars. He thought I was being too light-hearted and not academic enough. Perhaps he thought that a book with that sort of cover had to be grim! Ah, Maurice - never judge a book by it's cover, old lad. Thanks for the two stars, anyway!

Nicotine, the drug that never was. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the pharmaceutical business, hypnotherapy or anyone who has any compulsive behavior such as smoking or biting your nails etc. The author, Christopher Holmes, explains beyond a doubt and sometimes in a very humorous way, what is really going on behind the smoke and mirrors of the pharmaceutical industry and the NRT business. His arguments are backed up with proof which leaves the reader in no doubt that they are being hoodwinked by these industries. The author also explains in great detail just what hypnotherapy is and how it can be a useful tool in your life. He dispels the myths of hypnotherapy in detail and in a manner which makes sense to even a layperson. I enjoyed his approach which is sprinkled with humorous anecdotes which makes the reading enjoyable and light in spite of the 'heavy' subject matter. I would recommend reading this book with an open mind and a willingness to learn. You... More > will not be disappointed.< Less

As a practicing hypnotherapist based in Chepstow I have long advocated that nicotine was not addictive, Chris Holmes brings this argument to the inevitable conclusion that it is a toxic poison, sold to a populace deluded into believing that they are dependant on tobacco. Anyone in the business of helping people become non smokers should read this re read it then take it to their medical practitioner and ask them where do they stand, as the primary goal of the medical profession as proposed by Aelius Galenus back in 129 AD “first do no harm” is severely compromised when ever they prescribe or recommend NRT to anyone wishing to quit smoking

"Nicotine: The Drug that Never Was" I enjoyed this book enormously. It is lively and entertaining, and even though I haven't smoked for years, the first explanation of the smoking habit to make perfect sense to me. Allen Carr made quite a contribution to this debate and this book just takes that much further, dispensing with the addiction hypothesis completely and providing a model of the compulsive habit that will make a good deal of current thinking - particularly in my field, psychology - obselete. This book will probably upset a lot of people, but for all the right reasons. I found it very refreshing indeed.

"The Drug That Never Was" No wonder the bloody gum and the patches didn't work! Now I feel really conned! But at least now I know it wasn't my fault. I cant believe the failure-rate of the nicotine aids! They dont tell you that! I thought this book was absolutely brilliant, every smoker should read this, wether they want to stop or not, for the first time you find out why its not your fault. And what to do about it if you do want to stop. Really enjoyed it, and it explains a lot of my eating issues too. Now I'm going to use hypnotherapy to sort these things out!
