Christopher Neville is a new writer to the fantasy fiction genre, and his debut novel Dark World Prophecy is quite a few steps away from the well worn path of fledgling fantasy writers. For one thing, his influences are more modern - Neville is a member of the Final Fantasy gaming generation, who are better acquainted with the worlds of Spira and CGI than they are with Middle Earth and Disney. So for some readers, while the better known elements of fantasy are there - like elves and goblins - there will be some new concepts to grasp. Neville’s fantasy world is one you can visualise in CGI. The characters are more reminiscent of Final Fantasy and Japanese anime than they are of European folktales, and will appeal more to a generation who understands where Neville is coming from. Nevertheless, Dark World Prophecy is a fine debut novel, with some interesting twists that will keep most readers glued to the pages until the end. It is set in a world where gods rule the three major land... More > masses. The hero Kyshin comes from Forton, which is ruled by the god Dellose. When the story starts, Kyshin and his best friend Keeth are about to take their last trial before becoming Forton Warriors, when Forton is attacked by their deadly enemies from Yarverth. Kyshin is a very likeable hero, constantly hungry, ruled by his stomach, but shrouded in mystery. He seems to be an orphan, but he knows little about his parents. It seems he was attached to his mother, because he still wears her coat, but he knows nothing about his father. He knows nothing about his destiny, either, even when it is thrust upon him when the Yaverth Raiders attack. Neville doesn’t reveal everything about his hero or his world, and in that way it is like a video game where you explore and pick up clues and learn more as you go along. But the characters and the settings are fascinating, like the timid goblin Quizlik, who is adept with herbs and potions, and the mysterious Willow Girl, to whom Kyshin is very attracted. Yes, there is romance, but it doesn’t get in the way of advancing the story and battling monsters. In fact there is quite a bit of romance - Keeth’s girlfriend figures largely in the pieces of the puzzle that Kyshin has to unravel as he travels through Forton and across the sea into his enemy’s own country. The journey is exciting, and very visual. One of the best concepts in the book is the Peace Ship, a truly enormous city on the sea that plies between Forton and Yaverth. Neville creates a world that is believable and intricate, and toward the end, especially, there are moments that are genuinely moving, that could leave you with a lump in your throat. The ending will also leave you hanging in the air a bit until you realise that this is the first book in a trilogy, and Kyshin’s adventures aren’t over by a long way. To sum up - a great read, that leaves the reader impatient for more.< Less
