When Emma was five years old her father told her that with her eyes closed, she could be anybody she wanted to be. Emma was a war baby. Her teen-aged brothers were fighting on opposite sides during the war. Emma never knew which side she belonged to but she needed to belong. To be accepted, she frequently pretended to be like the ever changing authorities around her. As an eighteen years old medical student Emma marries a divorced man; this sin is condemned by her parents, by her society and by the church. Emma is excommunicated by people she loves; she carries the guilt of it all until she returns to meet her accusers.
