Affirmative action has become one of our nation's most misunderstood tool created to further civil rights in order for all men to truly be equal. The intent was not to lower standards for these groups but to allow them a competitive edge against the majority population. Somewhere along the lines, it was mistaken for a social engineering process that was in place to meet quotas and replace qualified white personnel with under qualified minorities. This perception is still growing and unless addressed through education, awareness and the willingness to tailor its clause it will continue counteract its intended cause. As our nation’s legal guardians continue to stand watch over the complexity of the issues surrounding this matter, the ultimate goal is to one day not need a governing policy to ensure integrity and fairness. Until then, “the issue of diversity is a fierce battleground in law and public policy.
