I have just re-read for the second time Leaves of Night, and am still profoundly moved by this short book, so rich, so captivating, so moving. Dr. Zenatti's Memoirs, enhanced with great poetic quality, express what he experienced as a child, alone and with his family, touch me profoundly. And the vibrant tribute he pays to the courage of Madame Morali, who risked so much to protect and save hundreds of Jews threatened with death ... Without the help of Madame Morali these superb memories would not have seen the light of day.

I have read a number of stories about the people who have courageously saved groups of Jewish people during World War II, at great risk to and sometimes at the loss of their own lives. I have been fortunate to make the acquaintance of Celine Morali's grand daughter,,....Marie-Anne Harkness, and have heard this personal account as a presentation, prior to reading "Leaves of Night". I have always been a student of history...and how much more exciting when you have a living connection to such a story. You re-live the details each time you discover a new one. Dr. Claude Zenatti has presented his experience in a clear manner which serves as a wonderful testimony to the best that humans can achieve in the face of troubling times.

This book brings to light the story of, Claude Zenatti and his family. By translating his memoir from French to English, Marie-Anne Harkness describes the heroic act of her grandmother Celine, who helped hide and transport many Jews to safety. Celine is among many in this book who acted heroically. Claude's testimony honors their memory and describes how they earned the honor to be memorialized in Jerusalem at Yad Vashem. We must never forget the 6 million who were exterminated so that future generations will learn what happened. I learned a lot about the French War time experience and how ordinary people became extraordinary. Very inspiring!

This is an amazing account of bravery, caring and a sense of righteousness that is not dimmed by fear of horrific repercussions. The story is based on facts compiled with love and special care by the author. "Leaves of Night" takes place during the World War II era. The author does not spend much time on the atrocities but connects the reader to the emotions and the mental suffering of the people involved. It is a short memoir with a huge impact.
