Jan 19, 2010This small but powerful book helped me to see myself and my skills in a positive light and the exercises helped me to do this in the context of my life as a whole. It made me evaluate what was important to me at home and at work and how my talents can improve these environments not just for me but for those I live and work alongside. It also gave me the confidence to consider new challenges that could help me share my skills with a wider audience.
Jul 8, 2009Some excellent thought provoking ideas and framworks for undertanding our own talents and how these can shape the work we do and get maximum impact in business. Good reflection of self, doing the exercises I was surprised how they helped crystalize my thoughts and focus on applying these in a positive way. Some good references, metaphors and quotes along with a solid interpretation of talent liberation.
May 26, 2009"Liberate Your Talent " Having just completed the reading of the book and the exercises here's my reflections:- One of my identified 'strengths' is strategic which can lead me to adopt an organised and logical approach to my work, so as an experiment I'm going instead, to write the rest of this as the spirit moves me, in no particular sequence but a random - intuitive one! Given that another of my 5 'strengths' is connectedness, I'll see where these random thoughts & feelings take me - I'm assuming, given the nature of 'connectedness' that it will make sense by the end of it! It reminded me of the portfolio process I followed when I did my BACP Counsellor and BACP Supervisor Accreditation: a focus on values, philosophy, style of work and through that my underlying 'vision' for what I do in my 'clinical work'. The journey enthused me all over again. It led me to be much more focused in my work and approach to what is for me more of participation in a 'co-creative art... More > form' towards development of mutual 'craft skills' for living, than a place for me to exercise my 'skills as a technician' to help 'people with problems'. It is an art form which seeks to honour and respond to the client's process and needs, with the welcome intervention of grace, within a safe, challenging and reflective space. I feel this Talent Liberation process may help me and my clients / supervisees do the same in the 'non clinical' worlds of coaching - coaching supervision - mentoring - organisational development & leadership. The journey with the book has helped me remind myself of things I already know (educare...latin.. to 'lead out'...the roots of education) plus add new insights (matching another of my 'strengths' which is learner), as well as to apply a definite rigour to how I can turn these reflections and opportunities for dialogue into practically applied action, thus honouring another of my 'strengths'.. achiever. And yes, this is certainly 'enthusing' me! It also encourages an exploration of (and interest in) the self... I'm beginning to feel that when I complete the 1:1 aspects of the work, and when I apply it to groups or teams, that it will facilitate another of my 'strengths', individualisation, where through dialogue and co-reflection I can really get an empathic sense of the uniqueness of the person(s) I am working with, no matter how many I may be working with. A rare privilege to be able to do this with other human beings. In terms of my 'action plan' it has helped me see from a systemic perspective how I can rebalance things to bring a greater focus to my 'non clinical' work, including a healthy 'work-life balance', vital to create space for rest, recuperation and reflection in a very demanding and also immensely rewarding line of work.< Less
May 24, 2009"Liberate your talent " One of the first things I was given in my new job was a copy of Liberate Your Talent, and initially the ideas threw me. I had no idea what I was talented at, what my skills really were, and certainly no idea on how they added value. I can’t say that this confusion evaporated instantly with reading the book, but it started a journey that has brought me to the point where I am happy with the positive introspection and self-assessment of talent liberation. I feel confident at recognising my strengths, I know how I can add the value in the tasks I work on, and how I work best with the people around me. In September I begin a new role at Accenture, a global management consulting firm that takes on hundreds of graduates each year. At Accenture, how I demonstrate, develop and use my talents will become pivotal in differentiating myself from a vast, highly able and competent crowd. While I feel my strengths and talents are still evolving, I recognise that my... More > self-starting and driven attitude fuels a talent for applying myself to new challenges and a passion for learning and personal development. In the workplace these talents transpire in the ability to quickly and ably apply myself to the needs of my team, understanding the challenges involved and where my role fits within that. Although it is not easy to articulate the value this adds, I feel that these skills mean that I do not require close direction and management in tasks, and I recurrently complete and deliver projects in an effective and creative way. I have a personal style that means I build relationships through a personable approach; driving engagement and followership through coordination and facilitation, rather than an extroverted or confrontational style. This book got me to ask myself these questions for the first time and is a great introduction to the concept of talent liberation.< Less
May 17, 2009"Liberate your Talent to liberate your Life!" Socrates said “Know thyself!”. And how right he was! And how hard it is without any guidelines to lead you in the process! Clive Wilson has now created an excellent and easy-to-use tool for self-reflection which is designed to guide you through the natural stages of a deep yet practical self-discovery journey that is so essential to come to that precious self-awareness. And the beauty of it is that you can revisit it over time, and see your own growth and evolution in the process. So that you can ever more become who you really are, by doing ever more what you are and being true to yourself. So that you can ever more be of service to others in the course, find meaning and fulfilment, give your contribution and truly make a difference. The book rightly adds the invitation to test your conclusions against the way others perceive us, and beautifully provides time for necessary reflection between the many self-querying exercises... Indeed: “People make their biggest contribution when they recognise, value, develop and use their unique talents in support of a cause they truly believe in”. As Clive further writes: “It is the alignment of your talent with [your organisational] and personal objectives that makes us a force to be reckoned with". And I know that the message comes from a space of authenticity, as, indeed, Clive himself is a living example of this simple yet profound and life-changing truth.< Less
