"Yakushima a Yakumonkey guide - review" This marvelous gem is full of great places to stay, fun things to do, interesting places to eat and even the island bus schedule - all in easy to read ENGLISH. If you don't speak Japanese, you know how hard it is to find information about this superb island in guidebooks or on the web. The handy guide is broken down into sections with detailed descriptions about everything from inexpensive campgrounds (complete with tents and sleeping bags to rent) to turtle watching along the coast, and price listings for all. I especially liked finding a guesthouse serving organic vegetarian food, normally difficult to find in Japan. Worthy of note are the charming page inserts containing local mythical stories about the forest;the author lives in Yakushima and seems to have a broad understanding of the island and its people. There are listings of places where you can be taught to make chopsticks with the remarkably old cedar, in case the rain stops... More > you from hiking. A short term visitor will find the guide helpful: info about the trails, (in terms of difficulty) quick kayaking tours, bus routes, ferry schedules, the beaches and of course turtle watching. Highly recommended!< Less
