Colleen Schirmer's book 'Breaking the Silence' speaks of the 'unspeakable'. As a young teenager she was beaten and raped by her father in a series of attacks. Her father threatened to kill her if she told anyone what had happened. For many years she did not dare to speak. Part of her journey to recovery was a two week stay in a psychiatric hospital for the treatment of short term reactive psychosis. She invites the reader to listen to her story, to hear how she reclaimed her voice, and to walk with her on the long road to recovery. Her story gives the reader an insight into the devastating impact of rape, and inspiration for other survivors. Colleen was encouraged to write her story by her doctor, her clinical psychologist, and other surivors of sexual abuse. This is a powerful and compelling book.

May 15, 2014Powerful and compelling book. Very sad story but beautifully written.
May 1, 2014Colleen Schirmer's 'Breaking the Silence' tells a terrible story. And yet, not just terrible, but triumphant as well. Colleen was sexually, physically and emotionally abused by her parents during the 1950's and 60's, and she shares this incomprehensible cruelty with her readers with utter clarity and absence of self pity. 'Breaking the Silence' then continues to tell of Colleen's episodes of psychosis which occurred later in Colleen's life. That she traveled though and beyond such life events shows what the human spirit can endure and survive. 'Breaking the Silence' must give hope and courage to the thousands of Colleen's fellow survivors of unspeakable cruelty; this is one of Colleen's stated intentions in writing this book. The crystal clarity of Colleen's writing goes straight to the reader's heart; it is almost unbearable reading, yet utterly compelling. Every adult should read as much of this as they can bear; it is a beautiful book, above all a story of triumph and love; such as... More > we all wish to know in our lives.< Less
Apr 25, 2014‘Breaking the Silence’ makes a serious contribution to the literature of parent-child abuse. Colleen Schirmer has somehow found the strength to survive her childhood abuse and create a beautifully written narrative of despair, hope and eventual triumph. It is a great strength of her writing that no detail of her horrific experiences and long recovery is spared. Throughout, her account is searingly honest. On my first reading I could manage no more than one or two chapters at a sitting, and on second reading I have come to see that this is a work of some greatness for its insight and ultimately its charity towards those who accompanied her on her journey. A reader could only be impressed by her account of the support and love she received from those in her immediate family, for whom the experiences of the book are also an often painful journey. Strongly recommended for book-groups and academia, to name but two of a large range of possible readerships.
