“A Lost Lady” by Willa Cather was first published in the year 1923. The central characters of the story are Marian Forrester and her husband, Captain Daniel Forrester. The husband and wife live in Sweet Water, a town along the Transcontinental Railroad. Though major part of the story is told from the perspective of Niel Herbert, a young man from Sweet Water, the novel has third person narrative. Niel Herbert happens to be the witness of the decline of Mrs. Forrester. He feels very sorry for her. The third person narrative describes the West, covering the period from the idealized age of noble pioneers to the modern age of capitalization and industrial boom.
