The story is set in the late 1960s. It was the time of great change, particularly for the Black America. They were entering in a new era for themselves through the Civil Rights Movement. The old life of slavery and the aura of sharecropping are very rapidly disappearing. New things are entering the lives of the African farm workers and slaves. The major conflict in the story is the clash between these two worlds. Dee experiences both these worlds. She is against her own heritage for the ideas and rhetoric of the new Black Pride movement.
