Incredible piece of scholarship that dives below the often sterile official histories to tell the human story of men who flew troop carrier aircraft - unarmed and unarmored - into combat to deliver airborne units, provide critical re-supply, evacuate casualties, and any other mission to support a world-wide war of movement. As a former soldier and C-47 restoration volunteer who spent more than five years researching the technical and tactical history of both the type aircraft and its employment, I appreciate the lengths Mark Vlahos went to 'put a face on history.' This work joins a small circle of exquisite histories to tell the Troop Carrier story, but from a distance of 75 years, Vlahos' devotion to detail and sources make his achievement all the more impressive.
