On her last day, Dr. Han Thieu, a Vietnamese doctor in Montreal, reminisces about her life, her husband, daughters, adopted son Quan, and friend Mathieu Hibou. In an act of love, she has decided to spare them her descent into unbearable pain and eventual death. Each of her remaining moments is like the rustling of papaya leaves—a sound only audible to those who choose to listen. Each memory brings sorrow and joy. For in life, love is but the counterface of suffering. Then with her last gasp, the story begins. The dark pain of post-war Vietnam and Cambodia blends into the youthful resilience of Malaysia and Thailand, the discovery of Canada and then new tragedies in Africa and the Middle East. Soldier, Lily, Peace and Pearls is a story teller’s tale. With every page you turn, let the ink lament a land lost, the paper sigh for past love and the letters paint desire for life renewed.

Jul 26, 2012Readers’ Reviews This story spans many countries and many people's lives. Con Cú provides poignant insight into the human condition with his scholarly ear on world history and politics while telling a tale of several brave souls who were forced to face serious hardships in the struggle to escape their occupied country. Also depicted are glimpses of hardened villains and the raw depravity of the human race, and yet moments of passion and endearing tenderness mixed with authentic heroism. The story is brilliantly told. I read the last three quarters of the book all in one sitting and was caught up in the narrative and the characters. Chris Turner, Wakefield, Quebec, Canada The novel really is a wonderful, touching tale of how the human spirit overcomes adversity. In the style of Hemingway, the author Con Cú has mastered the art of simplicity and economy of words, without foregoing the occasional stroke of poetic genius. I particularly liked the character of Minh Chau. Her... More > child-like charm endures into her adult life enchanting everyone around her, even if it only to mask the deep scars that she bears within her. Soldier, Lily, Peace and Pearls is an enduring and endearing tale that merits a wide readership. BPOTS, Cultus Lake, B.C., Canada An eloquent mix of the beauty and horror of life, and the triumph of human spirit amidst the tortuous and bloodier wars of recent times. A lively exploration of the human traits of hidden desires and profound love intertwined with the numbing atrocities that arise during war and corruption. Relationships span both exotic and familiar locales, a brilliant mosaic of human diversity and experience. Life’s wisdoms are revealed through golden nuggets that are delightfully sprinkled throughout this work, and this noteworthy one appears in the middle of the book: “The one thing that can guide you through the vicissitudes of life is understanding that kindness is the noblest of actions...” The writers understated style gently weaves this tapestry of life, trauma, love and bloodshed; and as the lives, experiences and relationships deepen - the writer’s passion for life, love, and overturnment of adversity come into full bloom and culminate in a poignant epilogue. The last line is both cosmic and enchanting! Reviewed by Phyllis Straub, Author of the Ordinary Adept, Olala, B.C.< Less
