"Napoleon Reconsidered" I was struck by the intentional ambiguity concerning the morality of the "criminal" in Coulson Kernahan's 1906 novel of class warfare. He dresses and looks like Napoleon and even while performing illegal acts defends his actions with such rational logic. But mostly I was surprised to find the prose quite swift at times. 98% of all thrillers from the first decade of the 20th century are so stodgy. The good ones challenge you to catch the nuances of the deliberate words, while the bad ones just bog you down with long, oblique ways of saying the obvious. THE DUMPLING is mired in the politics of its time -- which is surprisingly relevant to today's climate -- but its zany approach to arguing both sides with flamboyant criminals and earnest lawmen is remarkably fresh for a 100+ year-old book.
