Reprinting O'Brien's "A Complete Course of Jiu Jitsu" was a great initiative. Not only was O'Brien the jiu jitsu instructor of Theodore Roosevelt, but he was one of the early pioneer jiu jitsu instructors outside of Japan. In addition, his jiu jitsu, as evident from the illustrations in this book, was of considerably higher quality than that of many other Western instructors in the early 20th Century. Unfortunately, the book would have deserved a considerably better reprint than this. In a reprint of this kind, it would have been simple enough to insert a new foreword, giving some historical background and biographical detail. But the lack of such is a minor problem, compared with the poor reproduction quality. The text, in particular, is quite hard to read. Without being able to compare with the original book, it is hard to say how much the images suffer, but it seems clear that they, too, are poorly scanned and no attempt has been made to improve them digitally. The... More > descriptive text on the web page boasts about "large pages", but what is the use of those large pages when the margins are more than five centimetres (two inches) wide on every side? Why not enlargen the pages, or even better publish the book closer to its original format? In short, I was very happy to find this book, but I would have liked even more to find it in the quality it deserves. This is just sloppy.< Less
