I’ve tried to read anything I’ve found about the English Lovelace families. The is book tells the story from a refreshingly different perspective than I’ve experienced before. The book is based primarily on fact but includes a fair amount of supposition in describing what it must have been like to make the man, Francis Lovelace, who would become the future governor of New York. I was particularly interested in the way horses and the natural resources of the land were used in the story. When reading the book, I was imagining being in the places and time that C. S. Lovelace was describing. I hadn’t thought about what it would be like to be a young boy in England raised with four brothers and their little sister at the time the Mayflower was landing in America. How is it that one brother became a poet and another a pioneer? The book is packed with contemporary graphics and art, colorfully illustrating the 17th Century life and wars Francis Lovelace was encountering. The analysis of his... Francis was our first yachtsman and bequeathed the remains of the Lovelace Tavern. In designing the first postal system, he developed the Boston Post Road, which still stands today, exactly as he laid it out. You will find out why it is unlikely that American Lovelaces have no ancestors from Francis or his four Bethersden brothers. The book includes a timeline and genealogical table and well organized chapters that take the reader through the lifetime of a unique individual and family. It’s packed with thoughtful insight and is well worth the read!< Less
