This is a wonderfully personal memoir. It tracks the experience of a teenage girl, from her evacuation to Canada and the USA in 1940 to her eventual return to war-torn London in 1944. Told using a mixture of narration and many original letters home, the book is heart-warming and fascinating: we see Canada and the USA through a young and very British girl's eyes, contrasted with glimpses of frugal life back in the UK. But there's a personal story here, too: a teenager learning to live with strangers, adapting to a very different life, and growing up at the same time. Highly recommended.
