Brenda Lang is a nurse at the Lantz Institute where autistic savant, Joseph Neighbarger is a patient. Realizing that Joseph is being experimented upon, she flees the institute with him. Too soon, hired thugs are on their trail. The journey takes Brenda and Joseph from Massachusetts to Ohio.
Along the way, they meet Ralph Krauss, an annoying man but one who agrees to help them. Joseph readily accepts Ralph. Brenda is a harder sell. Eventually, however, their struggles drive them together. Brenda realizes that they flee for their lives.
