Not since Jack London has an author proclaimed the call of the wild the way D. L. Sigler does in The Last Fraction. In this account the ‘call’ is the gold fields of the Yukon Territories of Canada, just a couple degrees south of the Arctic Circle. Think midnight summer sun, only a few hours of winter sun, winter temperatures to – 80o F, permafrost of 10 to 15 feet. Think impossible, steep, narrow trails to get a ton of gear into Canada. Treacherous rivers with rapids and boulders being navigated in many boats of varying degrees of ‘sea-worthiness’ built at launch site by ‘Stampeders’ in their quest in the ‘Last Great Gold Rush’ in northern Yukon’s Dawson City, some 64 degrees north latitude. The incredible journey into these gold fields in the late 1890’s is a story others have attempted to tell, but none with the factual, hard-hitting expertise of D. L. Sigler. A million people dreamed and bragged they were going to the Yukon to strike it rich. A hundred thousand set out, and as the... More > author states, less than half of these Stampeders made it to Dawson City and the ‘Last Great Gold Rush’. Many of us have, at one time or another had the gold fever. Gold has an aura ( its atomic symbol is Au, from the Latin Aurum). In the late 1890’s gold was valued at 16 dollars per ounce. Today gold is in the 1300 dollar range. A ton of gold valued at half a million dollars during the Yukon heyday would have a value today of some 40 million dollars. Hundreds of millions of dollars in gold came out through Dawson City at the 16 dollar per ounce value. One other thing, you have to read the book to understand the title! The author’s three heroes were introduced to us in ‘Cigala’, his previous work. I recommend that book too! See my review of ‘Cigala’.< Less
