The Green Man is a short Oratorio (words and concept by Richard Simmons) lasting some 16 minutes. Originally written to celebrate the 1,400th anniversary of Rochester Cathedral in Kent, England, where wooden masks of Green Men adorn the ceiling. Are Pagan and Christian stories of rebirth linked by the symbolism of the Green Man, a mystical figure with green shoots springing from his mouth who is found in the decoration of many English parish churches? Was he merely accommodated by the new religion, like many pagan symbols, or does he show that there is one resurrection myth, expressed in different ways for different times? Scored for high tenor narrator and SATB choir, it is orchestrated for Flute, Horn in F, Trumpet in Bb, Timpani, Tambourine, Harp and String Orchestra. A rehearsal score is available. Please contact me directly regarding parts.
