In The Field, Vietnam and my letters home August 14, 2012 What was the Vietnam War really like? In 1968, I was a junior in college when I failed my physical exam for the draft into military service. Being anti-war, I was pleased. However, I was only too aware that others were forced to fight a war they likely did not support. During my senior year, a close friend was drafted and fatally wounded while charging up a hill into enemy fire. That stinging memory lingered with me for years, which culminated in a search for his name among the 58,000 at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C. My friend, Damon, recently peaked my curiosity when he told me he was publishing the letters he wrote home to his new wife while he was in Vietnam combat in 1968. I was hooked!!! My wife and I both read the book and were struck with the fact that, with the exception of a few twists of fate, Damon and his wife’s story could have been ours. The danger of combat and separation created a stressful dynamic... More > for them that was simply unknowable to us. Damon’s technique of beginning each month’s group of letters with a brief summary of world news and events helped put his experiences in context. Quite often his reality on the ground was in direct contrast to what was being portrayed in the media as well as historical accounts. This book will appeal to a variety of readers. Sons and daughters of Vietnam vets will enrich their understanding of their loved one’s war experience. Vets who were in command and anyone in a current leadership position may find a valuable sense of the soldier’s perspective of command hierarchy, from Damon’s candid and often caustic depiction of the “higher ups”.< Less
