"In Perspective" With the never-ending controversy over whether photography is art, award-winning photographer Dan Holm has certainly helped put the argument to rest with his second assemblage of published photographs – “In Perspective.” Holm, once again, captures what he sees as, “molehills turned into mountains and obstacles into opportunities.” With each of the sixty-one 5” x 7” photographs with such titles as “Nova” “Crooked Smile” and “Under the Canopy,” Holm adds – along with titles – one-liners that add to these perspectives even more. Though many of the photographs need no more than the title, Holm’s continuity is so clean and fluid that one finds his-or-herself deeply engrossed in each of these marvelous photographs. The text, however, gives us an insight to Holm’s depth of vision as he expands our awareness of what he believes as “great ideas, ideologies and inventions that happen when people see things they aren’t looking for and discover things they never... More > expect.” Example: There is a close-up of the side of an alligators closed mouth, its teeth protruding over its lower jaw in a pattern most would never view as abstract design, much less composition. And there is the love story put forth with a simple shot of two heart-shaped coffee cups on a table, one tipped over with spilled coffee – the color of red poured from the cup onto a white table. The visual simplicity tells a love story so penetrating that words are not needed. Though his visual palette contains mostly floral, architecture and a spattering of animals and people, one can only hope that Holm’s expansive eye will take us to more of the meandering lives of everyday people – which he has dabbled with in the past, and has proved to be quite adroit. As with his first venture into publishing, “Fragments,” Dan Holm has, with “In Perspective,” proven that art is found wherever and however the eye of the artist can place on canvas or paper a vision we can look at and say: “That’s nice. That’s really nice. That’s art!” With both published books, “Fragments” and “In Perspective,” Dan Holm has achieved that and more.< Less
