A worthy follow-on to his excellent 'Eternal Backcountry Return.' Dan McCaslin goes deeper into his personal experiences in Santa Barbara County's backcountry, sharing stories of events and friends, all the while providing sparkling philosophical commentary and insight, particularly about humankind's complex relationship with our planet. He often mentions Chumash Native American lore and tradition, always with respect. The last chapter in his book includes a sensitive discussion of the Chumash mythological journey to Similaqsa, Land of the Dead: an interesting final touch to a book described by its title as an autobiography. Well done, Dan! I recommend this book to those who are interested in what might be hidden in the wilderness that is not that far from Santa Barbara, and to those who might be seeking an intellectual journey as well.
