Book review Teenage Girls on Motherhood by Dana Mendonca Dana’s project is a study of four teenage girls and their opinions on a subject clouded with stigma in this country, teenage motherhood. In the introduction she mentions the media misrepresenting the issue and wanted to hear from the people who are living it. Her in-depth interviews and portrait photography make the book very personal and often endearing to read. The diversity of her chosen subjects gives differing, honest and unbiased views. Two of the girls have toddlers and two do not. Neither if the mothers have a partner to lend a hand. Yet all of the girls have something positive in their lives. The book itself is almost square. The style and layout is very clean, with blank pages to separate sections. The majority of the images are taken in landscape, well lit and feature mainly pastel colours. There are often organized in small sequences, on single pages, moving between rooms in the girls homes. Personal objects and... More > posters in the walls give insight into each of their lives. Dana breaks up the structure of the book with pages of transcripts from the recorded interviews. Each section begins with introductory text, letting the reader conjure up their own image of the subject before they turn the page to reveal a face. Keeping text and image separate adds to the polished and organized feel, in contrast perhaps to the chaotic and difficult life of a single teenager raising a child.< Less
