Shades of Charmed, Firefly, Fight Club, Red Dwarf, Serenity, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate and I don't know what else. No more than shades, though - this full-bodied story is absolutely unique. Well, until the rest of the series comes out, of course... If you're looking for clean-cut heroes, angsty teenagers and wimpy pseudo-heroines, Half-Light isn't for you. These characters drink, smoke, swear and they're definitely not celibate. That said, they're incredibly loyal and heroic - for they'll do anything for each other and what they believe is right. They'll even save the galaxy whilst battling a hangover. Now that's heroism for you. The blokes are tough but definitely human - and not too hard to engage in the occasional tear or "manly embrace" (whatever that actually is) in public. The image I get is like something out of Fight Club, though I could be wrong. The ladies are equally tough and they can hold their own in a fight - you wouldn't want to get on their bad side -... More > but they'll happily join you for a drink in the pub. Now, you'll have to forget your physics degree for some of the technical details in this type of sci-fi, for they're very sparse on the ground - but the story's still well worth it. Hey, it's fiction, after all. From the opening fight scene through to many surprises on alien planets and Earth, the action in this book doesn't stop. Never bogged down in descriptions or agonised mental deliberations like in The Hunger Games, Half-Light reads like it could very easily be its own TV series - one I don't want to end. It even has an interesting soundtrack - but I won't spoil that. The seamless narrative follows a shipload of characters in a third person narrative that doesn't head-hop every second paragraph. There are a few cliffhangers at the end of chapters, just like in a good TV series, but it'll keep you guessing. I had no idea how this would end - and the ending of the next book is anyone's guess. I'd buy the sequel to this without blinking - and the rest of the series, too.< Less
