What does it look like when a brilliant poet chronicles his own journey towards death? What if he were to leave a trail of musings, reflections, emotions, startling insights, and openings into the infinite for his readers to follow -- almost to the very end? This is in fact the gift left by the great Sufi poet Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore just before his death from cancer in April 2016 – a legacy totally unprecedented, to my knowledge, in either poetic or spiritual literature. Moore’s 30 previous volumes of poetry and other works chronicle a life of devout worship, heart-based goodness, and eyes open to the full vibrancy of God’s creation. The name Al-Hayy itself means “The Living One.” The present volume contains much of his playful exuberance at miracles of every kind: "Somewhere in the depths of a forest/ a flower of such uniqueness is blooming deep cobalt centers with/ gold pistils and petals’ tips painted red" . . .Other times there’s improbable speculation . . . "If... More > the ocean were to turn/ inside-out would it be/ sky? --all those stars sharks and dolphins/ shooting through the air?" . . .wry musings on his impending end . . . "Hospital bed:/ toboggan to the/ coffin" . . .expressions of acceptance of what is to come . . . "I’m practicing my/rictus smile not too broad/ not too timid like something sunk/ to the bottom of the sea in contentment/ with God’s decree" . . .and exalted glimpses into the bliss that awaits him: "The next world envelops/ this one silver tree sparklers/esplanades more ruby than the/ molten core of Mars." The volume begins with loving tributes to the poet from family members that include young grandchildren, and from editor Myra Diaz, who worked with Moore in his frailest days to piece together this collection of final offerings. Whether one picks it up as an intriguing source of speculation, as a companion on one’s final journey, or strictly for its poetic merits, Holy Door in the Ground is sure to carve a unique spot in the heart, the spirit, and the imagination.< Less
