I received the e-book of The Lexical Funk: A Triumph of Words by Daniel Clausen as a member giveaway on Library Thing. The copy I received is a shorter version of his book. After reading this, I had to sit for awhile and let the words and rhythm flow through my mind as I attempted to put together a review. This book is like sitting back sipping a fine with wine while listening to a great saxophonist blow out some really great improvisational jazz tunes. This book is a series of short stories. Each one has a wonderful plot. There are quite a few stories that are conveyed through imagery rather then straight forward story telling. Each sentence invokes such images in my mind. Many simply make me chuckle. Here is one of my favorite lines: Travis is leaning on the counter reading the latest Insomniac Machine-Gun Monkey comic (my personal favorite as well). He’s the first to notice her – the bombshell from the future. I am not quite sure why I like that line so much. It just stuck with me.... More > My favorite story in this book, however, is Lexical Funk: how the white boy learned to settle down and love the Afro. The e-book is a short read that is tons of fun. The cover found over at Library Thing is much more interesting then the one found on Amazon.< Less

"Pure genius." I found this book to be very creative, clever and humorous. It like nothing I've ever read before :) Fantastic. The short stories were very entertaining. I finished this book in under 2 days, got me hooked.

The Lexical Funk takes a unique and wonderful approach to the traditional short story. Each story is laced together with interludes and short messages from the author illustrating how random musings can come together to form a cohesive text that in the end is next to impossible to put down. The method to Mr. Clausens's madness is felt and experienced more than understood at times, giving the series an emotional undercurrent that leaves the reader nostalgic the moment the book is finished. Each story chronicles stories of love, understanding and alienation, all of which are relatable to any reader, in spite of some outlandish characters and settings. The writing style explores these themes in a methodically tongue-in-cheek way, reminiscent of Douglas Adams or Matthew Good's series captures in "At Last There is Nothing Left to Say. Comparisons aside, it is the writing style that separates this book from its contemporaries. Wholly original while still relatable, the author has the... Overall a fantastic collection from a young writer and I genuinely look forward where his writing takes me next.< Less

"A good pause in a hectic life." What a book this was!!!!! For not being of a large size it made me feel quite a bit of emotion but in an unconventional way. I laughed out loud and made the people around me give strange stares. I pondered about the way I thought about things and if I was really like the person Daniel was describing. My favorite short story in it has to be "Starlight Terror and the Cappuccino Machine". One of those that left you thinking what the fuck was this guy on when he wrote this. In fact a lot of the book is that way, mostly all of the book is that way. Wonderful ramblings of a person that thinks all to much from the "reads" of things. If the economy wasn't so bad these days I would buy up a few copies of this book and give it to my friends that need a good release from their day to day drama and monotony of life. And Daniel if you read this (which I'm sure you will) I whole heartedly enjoyed your book and would love for you to at... More > least be in the works for another one.
