Military defeat in Indo-China leads to the downfall of the French government. Pierre Mendes-France assumes the role of Prime Minister, but his Cabinet is riddled with Communists in sensitive ministries of the government. Acting on orders from Moscow, these men steer French policy in an strongly anti-NATO direction; the CIA, acting in concert with conservative members of the French Army tries unsuccessfully to eliminate the Communist faction but draws NATO into a larger conflict with the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, as America's attention is focused on the deteriorating situation in Europe, the Chinese and North Koreans (with Soviet support) set out to re-ignite the Korean War.

Wow...just finished this great read. Having grown up in the '70's and '80's at the tag end of the Cold War, and well remembering fears of the "Evil Empire", "The Day After" and the angst of nuclear war that lurked ever present in the background of my youth, I had some reluctance at the thought of reading about a nuclear World War III. Mr. Masters has devised a very believable scenario for a nuclear World War III fought in 1954. While no student of history, I could recognize enough of actual events in this novel that it comes alive and the subtle twists of events become very plausable. The first short section of the book is a little slow and heavy in a very Soviet sort of way. But that serves to set up the story, and can easily be forgiven as you are quickly drawn into this story and are finally picked up carried along at breakneck pace by the end. Written as a series of short episodes, this story whisks you on a roller coaster ride through points around the globe.... More > While many of the characters of the novel are real historical figures, the added characters and plot lines lend a real sense of reality to the insanity. The events unfold briskly and I found myself not wanting to believe their very believable feel. At times I finished reading an edisode and realized my heart was pounding. Later, I had to wipe tears from my eyes at seeing the nuclear destruction wrought on cities and their citizenry, and yet feeling uplifted by the humanity rising above the insanity. The final political revelations and the costs of human life feel like a right cross straight to the jaw. I highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a great read. Congratulations on a fine work Mr. Masters.< Less
