Edgar Alan Poe liked to tell tales of horror. The death of a dearly beloved maiden was his favorite theme, and male characters did not fare too much better. Even survivors suffered horrifying experiences. “The Pit and the Pendulum” illustrates this fact. Even Poe’s humor has a macabre aspect. For example, “The Predicament” features humorous applications of Latin quotations. They are extremely funny, but a gruesome element enters the picture when a Latin quotation is spoken by a head that is cut off from its body. For those who are not yet acquainted with the works of Edgar Alan Poe, this e-book is a good introduction. For those who have already read the works of this important American author, this e-book is a good review.
