“Faith of Our Fathers” is a collection of Christian poems by Daniel Zimmermann. Stylistically, they have a pleasing musical quality and a regular rhyme and rhythm. This is aptly illustrated by the first verse of a poem entitled “Life,” which compares life to a journey in a balloon: Father, as I strike my ballast, Ranging far, I know not where, Domes of watchful ozone shield me, Ordered by Paternal Care. Some poems have a historical basis, such as a poem commemorating Boris and Gleb, Christians who suffered martyrdom in Russia. The last verse of this poem reads: God bids you march glorious on high. Whosoever trusts in Jesus shall never die. Martyrs of God, faithful in strife, Crowns of glory now await you! Walk into life! Some poems are put into the mouth of an imaginary speaker, such as “The Song of the Timorous,” and “The Song of the Desolate.” Sometime personification is employed. In one poem, a seed delivers a message; in another, an eye speaks. The last verse of the latter poem... More > reads as follows: Holy Lord, let my vision be clear (Ah, an evil eye ne’er let me be) That with gratitude single, sincere, I may gaze on Thy goodness and Thee. There are poems for such occasions as weddings, birthdays, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, New Years Eve, Ascension Day, and Thanksgiving Day. For example, the second verse of a Christmas poem tells of how the shepherds visited the manger: The infant Jesus they adored; They glorified and praised the Lord. With missionary rapture keen They told their friends what they had seen. They praised God’s holy work of love, The Savior sent from heaven above. The book contains 150 poems, more or less. Most of them have three to five stanzas.< Less
