Review by Seán McGrady, author of: 'The Backslider' and 'The Bastard Pleasure' (Dzanc Books). Prophetically powerful and profound... Words of Steei & Velvet reveals to the reader the secrets of his own heart. It is a flow of emotion from start to finish, mercilessly so, a torrent at times, but also, and no less powerfully and pasionately, a gentle lapping upon the soul. It is a succession of insightful intensive "studies" of individual states and relations, it scans the horizon of mental acts, the threats to sanity, and to being itself, what is present and what is not, what is possible, all clearly springing forth from a deep personal acquaintance with immense anxiety and despair, troubled and ambiguous desires for love and joy. It is utterly and uncompromisingly courageous, taking upon itself the profound negative and destructive immanently structural "powers" of meaninglessness and doubt, guilt, fate and death that have been experienced. The greatest... More > task for the poet is to maintain this courage, not to confuse the Life of pain and despair as something to be overcome by the safe life, the secure life, and above all life as the search for "happiness". These temptations constitute cowardice not courage. Self affirmation is strong here, but it also includes self negation. As Nietzsche said, life creates more life and loves it's creation but it must ultimately turn against itself. The self here in this poetry is often elusive, perhaps it is more than one self, but definitively human, as it is not merely an observer, and not merely distancing reflection, it is immersed in the interaction with general emotions of the places and times that constitute an environment both destructive and creative. It sometimes withdraws wonderfully to a narrow existential self-relatedness, reduced circumstances where meaning itself becomes meaningless, where doubt and hopelessness appear to prevail. There is a deep sadness in this work, but overall, in moments of beautiful intuition into becoming, the endeavour to persevere, to go on, to go on caring, with resolve, in-spite-of everything, triumphs.< Less
